Kitchener Chiropractor discusses Foot Health

The Health of Your Feet

Your feet have a direct impact on the rest of your body. Like the foundation of a house, they support the weight of everything above them. Even a small problem in your feet can lead to a subtle change in the way you walk. This in turn will cause a chain reaction of adjustments in your posture and walking mechanics. And all that puts stress on joints higher up on your body, leading to more serious problems.

Symptoms of poor foot mechanics include the following:

  • Localized foot pain
  • Bunions, hammer toes
  • Arch/heel pain
  • Leg/knee pain
  • Hip or back pain, and even neck pain

The best first step is to schedule a visit with a chiropractor to determine if your feet could be part of your problem. After an assessment, you’ll know your options.

Dr. Colin and Dr. Julia are trained to use GaitScan, a computerized system that records your timing sequences during gait as you walk or run across a pressure plate. This enables them to have a clear picture of your foot mechanics and to determine whether you would benefit from wearing custom made foot orthotics.

How does GaitScan work? As you walk across the pressure plate, thousands of tiny sensors capture the distribution of pressure of your foot over time. This is certainly something no one could determine with the naked eye just watching you walk. Your foot is in contact with the ground for less than one second, so a computer-generated analysis is far more accurate than a glance with the eye.

A 2D and 3D visual representation of the pressure under your foot is provided. The information is summarized in a report that can be printed for you and the doctor. This will help determine if the pain you are experiencing is related to faulty foot function.

If orthotic therapy is required, your information is sent to the Orthotic Group laboratory and custom made orthotics are manufactured specifically for your feet.

The Orthotic Group’s custom orthotics help restore the normal balance and alignment of your body by gently correcting foot abnormalities. Several types of orthotics are available including sport, casual, dress and specialty orthotics. These are completely personalized orthotics which are far more durable and helpful than any ready-made orthotic you might find in a pharmacy.

Your personalized orthotics can fit into most of the shoes you currently wear, or you can order quality shoes along with your orthotics. You’d be surprised by the variety of shoe and boot styles available to fit your orthotics. There are now some beautiful boots available for the Fall and Winter seasons. So you can be stylish and take care of your health at the same time. Contact us for more information
