Furthermore, Shift Concussion Management provides a framework for concussion intervention. As a result, the injury is managed early and effectively. Here at KW Health Connection, Dr. Colin is a trained provider of the Shift Concussion Management program.

Shift is a proud supporter of stopconcussions Foundation, a concussion awareness initiative founded by former Philadelphia Flyers Captain Keith Primeau and former European professional hockey player, Kerry Goulet.

Shift Concussion Management involves 3 components:

  1. Neurocognitive Testing
  2. Physical Testing
  3. Rehabilitation Strategies
  1. Neurocognitive Testing

Being symptom-free does not mean concussion recovery. Neurocognitive testing provides an objective measure to determine recovery. Neurocognitive testing is assessed through computerized cognitive testing protocols. Although baseline testing is preferred and recommended, the neurocognitive test used for concussion assessment has a normative database with proven reliability and validity.

The computerized cognitive tests assess four main performance factors:

  • Memory
  • Reaction Time
  • Attention Span
  • Problem-Solving
  1. Physical Testing

Physical testing can involve three major areas:

  • Light aerobic exercise
  • Balance and coordination
  • Visual Function

Concussions have a considerable effect on balance and visual coordination. Different testing exercises are used assess function.

As mentioned, symptom-free does not equal recovery. In regards to athletes, physical exertion testing helps assess return-to-sport participation. Physical activity can aggravate concussion symptoms so it is important to assess physical exertion prior to sport participation.

  1. Rehabilitation Strategies

To optimize recovery from a concussion, several techniques can be used on their own or in combination.

  • Individualized resting strategies and home instruction
  • Specific work/school modifications
  • Manual therapy (to address associated conditions like whiplash or neck pain)
  • Re-assessment of physical testing

Receiving comprehensive and individualized assessment is important for concussion care. In addition to diagnosis, managing concussions is critical to helping with recovery. If you need baseline testing or post-injury concussion care, let KW Health Connection help.
